The market these days have a plethora of virtual server platforms that you can select from. Information from Netcraft gives us a list of the most common ones including the following:

Sixty percent of respondents say that they use UNIX and Linux virtual hosting platforms that run on the Apache server. Thirty percent say that they use Windows NT/2000 when they are running their Internet Information Server.

Some of the other items on the list include SunONE – a virtual server – Zeus, iPlanet, Weblogic, and many others. Most of the virtual hosts on the list support both platforms and virtual servers.

The entire part of the computer’s operating system has to be installed before it can work properly. In the same way, the operating system of the virtual server has to be able to carry out the various functions of the website being hosted on it. The most often-used virtual platforms under UNIX include Linux virtual hosting, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. The most popular among all these is Linux because of the amount of support that it can provide to the platform. The other platforms that are increasing in popularity are Windows 2003 and Windows 2000.

Given that there are just plenty of various server platforms that you can select from, how do you consider which one to host your site under?

If you have a website that only consists of the usual HTML web page, then you can use any of the virtual server platforms available. But if you have dynamic web pages, you need to find one that supports CGI, PHP, or SSI technology. When this is the case, the UNIX platform is probably the most ideal.
