Webhosting falls broadly into two main categories — paid for and free. Free hosting can be useful for non-critical projects smaller projects which do not demand much storage space or bandwidth — it is best suited to beginners or very small business ventures. Free webhosting will not generally offer good customer service, top performance or attractive advertising options. Free hosts are renowned for suddenly going out of business and providing a service which is slower than the paid for alternatives and offer little more than very basic facilities.
However, as long as you choose a low budget hosting company, paid hosting does not necessarily have to be expensive. There are a few steps you can take to ensure the cost of paid for hosting does not creep up to high without compromising too much on quality. Many hosts will offer hosting for very reasonable rates for up to around 100 MB since, to them, the cost of hosting is only $0.10 per megabyte. There are other aspects which should also be considered, of course:
- Look for hosting which offers fast uploading of digital media such as photos and video. Without this, you’ll lose out on the fun of low budget hosting.
- Often low cost hosting is given at a reduced rate or even no charge at all for an initial one-month trial period. This is useful if you are not sure which host to choose and would like to try a few first. You would then be able to continue with the host which best fits your requirements and pocket.
- When you eventually sign a contract, you may expect to be given additional services to those which were available during the trial period.
- With a paid service, there will not be the branding or advertising on your website pages which you will probably find you will have to put up with in the case of free webhosting.
- If you choose low budget hosting, you will need to register your own domain name; sometimes your preferred domain name will not be available, however.
Another option to consider is shared hosting. This type of service is widely available and usually costs between $1 and $25 per month. This is a good option from the performance point of view too – although the cost is low, there is not the same amount of compromises made as with free hosting packages. Small to medium sized websites will find this type of service the best compromise between cost and functionality.
